Learning Styles

Cognitive scientists have criticized the theory of 'Learning Styles' (Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing and Kinesthetic), but many educators still believe in their relevance. However, it is crucial to recognize that learners have different academic strengths, and these also vary across subjects (Math, English, Science, etc.), but the purpose of education is not just to focus on what learners are already successful at; it is to develop new skills and knowledge, and this correlates with a Growth Mindset approach to teaching and learning. It is also necessary for teachers to present information in a variety of modalities, but rather than only focusing on the modality, teachers must focus on the quality of the content, as well as the teaching methods, strategies and activities.
