This session demonstrates how PBL and PP can be applied in English language learning classrooms to create engaging integrated-skills lessons, as well as consolidate previous learning.
Participants will choose a theme for PBL, create a communicative project-based lesson, and present this to their peers.
Questions to guide PBL
What is the purpose of the project?
What are the learning outcomes of the project? How do they align with the curriculum?
What skills, knowledge and language systems is the project developing?
What kind of support does each student need individually/group? Who can provide it?
Who will provide learning feedback? When? How?
How is it assessed? Will it be “graded” with letters, numbers, competencies? Will this be teacher-based, school-based, curriculum-based, or student-based?
How should the product be sequenced to support learners and maintain motivation? How can the student bring themselves (affections, experience, voice, choice, talent, curiosity) to the project? Also, what is the teacher’s role in the process?
How will we know if the project was effective? Learner feedback?
What kind of project would the student never forget?
What’s most critical to the success of the project? Creativity? Critical thinking? Organization? Grit?
Can students work within their local community to solve authentic problems, or celebrate meaningful opportunities?
Is technology use distracting, useful, or critical to the success of the project?
Does it make sense for the project to also be Inquiry or Problem-based?
How can students build on their unique schema and background knowledge to produce something special?
