Week One: Sept 4: Chapters 1-3 or the chapter summaries link above. 

  1. What is Anne daydreaming/fantasizing about on p. 1 and 2? Do you daydream? What do you dream about?

  2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of small towns? How do you think small-town life affects the relationships in Avonlea? What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a city? Which would you prefer? Why?

  3. If you had a “Village Improvement Society” for your city, what would you recommend? Why?

  4. What is the mix up in Chapter Two? Have you ever been confused and thought something/someone was something/someone else? Tell us about it.

  5. Are your friends with any of your neighbours? Describe them (personality and appearance).

  6. How can communities become stronger and more connected? 

  7. If you could live anywhere in the world and at anytime, where would you live and why? 

Week Two: Sept 11: Chapters 4-6 or the chapter summaries link above. 

  1. Summarize Anne’s first day as a teacher. What happens? Do you remember your first day at school? Tell us about it. 

  2. What is your school like now? What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying online? 

  3. What do you think education will be like in the future? Why? 

  4. Tell us about a funny, interesting or special school memory. Think about 5W+H (who, what, when, where, why and how).

  5. At the meeting of the “Avonlea Improvement Society”, the members are trying to get donations. Which charity would you donate money to? Why? Support your answers with evidence and details.

  6. Does Elizabeth Andrews think young people don’t behave? Have ideas towards young people changed in your country? Towards women and girls? Talk about changes over time. What do you think and hope the future will bring?

Week Three: Sept 18: Chapters 7-9 or the chapter summaries link above. 

  1. Would you like to be a teacher? Why or why not? Support your answer with evidence and examples.

  2. What job do you want when you finish your education? Why? What do you need to do to get your job? What duties does your job have?

  3. Sexism is addressed at school in Chapter Seven. What happens? Are female and male teachers treated equally? In other jobs in the past and now?

  4. Chapter 8 has some humorous events. Summarize them. Tell us a funny story from your life recently.

  5. Do you have younger siblings? Tell us about your siblings (character and appearance).

  6. Why does Anne forgive Davy’s behaviour in Chapter 9 (p. 69)

  7. Mr Harrison and Mrs Lynde do not get along. Summarize their relationship. How do you deal with people you don’t get along with? Give an example to illustrate your answer.

Week Four: Sept 25: Chapters 10-12 or the chapter summaries link above. 

  1. How is Anne becoming grown up, but how is she still a teenager?

  2. Summarize the incident with Dora and Davy in Chapter Ten. Have you or your siblings ever done anything mischievous or naughty to each other?

  3. What is Anne’s funniest teaching story? Tell us a funny classroom story.

  4. Describe the Avonlea school? How was it similar or different to your school before the Taliban? To DD. Make a list comparing and contrasting the schools.

  5. Do you ever write letters? Who do you write letters to? Do you use social media/texting/emails to communicate with friends and family? Which way do you prefer?

  6. If you could write a letter to Anne, what would you say to her? Why? If you could write a letter to Lucy Maud Montgomery, what would you say?

Week Five: Oct 2: Chapters 13-15 or the chapter summaries link above. 

  1. Did/do you believe in fairies or other magic creatures? Do you like any other stories or movies with magic or fantasy? Why/why not?

  2. If you could have any wish, what would you wish? Why?

  3. Do you have a favourite flower? Why? Does it have a special meaning. Each month has a birthday flower; look your birthday month flower up online and see what it is. Does it represent you?

  4. Summarize the tragic story of Hester and her baby in Chapter 13. How does Anne try and help her?

  5. Anne tells Jane not to worry about Monday. Do you ever dread things? What? How do you manage stress? How do you relax?

  6. Do you agree with Anne that a poem has a soul? Find a short poem to read to us. Or tell us a poem in Farsi/Dari and what it means. Why do you like it? You could also share a poem you wrote.

  7. Summarize what Anne overhears when she is walking in Chapter 16 (p. 121).

  8. Are governments honest or truthful? Why or why not? Give examples and evidence.

  9. Anne is upset about the ads on the fence. What do you think she would think of modern advertising on television, print and social media? What do you think about it? Does it affect you? How?

Week Six: Oct 9: Chapters 16-18 or the chapter summaries link above. 

  1. What is Anne excited about in Chapter 16? Are you excited about anything? Tell us about it.

  2. Have you ever planned a dinner party? Tell us about it. Who was there? What did you serve? Why was it special? Tell us about a dinner party you have attended.

  3. It’s the summer vacation in Avonlea. When is your DD vacation? What are you planning to do?

  4. What would be your dream summer vacation? Think about 5W+H. Why?

  5. What is Diana worried about (p 139)? Why is body image and confidence a problem that never seems to end? What can we do to address it in our modern world? With technology?

  6. What accidents happen in Chapter 17? Describe them.

  7. Are you an imaginative person? Why or why not? Do you ever make up stories? Do art? Dance?

  8. Summarize the adventure on the Tory Road. Have you ever been stuck anywhere?

Week Seven: Oct 16: Chapters 19-21 or the chapter summaries link above. 

  1. What is your ideal day? Think about 5W+H.

  2. Do you agree with Anne that a simple life is best? Why or why not?

  3. Describe Paul’s grandma. What are your grandparents like (character and appearance)? Do you have a favourite grandparent? Why?

  4. Paul misses his mother. Describe your mother. Why is she special? Tell us a story about something special that she has done for you.

  5. Davy is jealous of Paul’s relationship with Anne. Have you ever been jealous. Tell us why? How did you overcome it?

  6. How is Anne and Gilbert’s relationship developing? Give evidence from the story.

  7. What does Anne to intend to do in Chapter 20 (p. 170)? What actually happens (p. 174)? Summarize the surprise visit. Have you ever had a surprise visit? Tell us about it!

  9. What does your name mean? Why did your parents give you your name? What do Anne and Diana think about their names?

  1. Describe the relationship between Mrs Rachel Lynde and her husband. How is their relationship unusual for the time? Do you think opposites attract? What qualities will/would you look for in a partner?

  2. Are Anne and Miss Lavendar similar? Why or why not? Who do you think you are similar to? Dissimilar to?

  3. Summarize the story of Stephen Irving and Miss Lavendar? Do you know any similar stories from literature (films and books)?
